This week in Reception, we had an exciting adventure exploring the world of lengths! After our fun weighing activities last week, we turned our attention to understanding measurements, learning important mathematical vocabulary like longer, shorter, tall, and short.
Our journey began with the story of Superworm, where we followed the adventures of a very special worm. We loved diving into the story and using our imagination to picture all kinds of fun scenarios. After reading the book, we had an exciting time in the messy play tough spot, where we went on a hunt for our very own Superworm. Out of a selection of pretend worms, we had to find the one that was exactly 10 cubes long—it was tricky, but we did it!
To continue our exploration of lengths, we used playdough to create worms of different sizes and had lots of fun ordering them by length. We also built tall towers, comparing which ones were the tallest and which were the shortest.
Outside, the fun continued as we searched for real worms and other insects that might be friends with Superworm. We also collected sticks and ordered them by size, using our new vocabulary to describe them.
One of our favourite activities was drawing around our bodies with chalk on the playground. We then used footprints to measure and compare how long we were, which was so much fun!
It’s been a week full of discovery and excitement as we’ve learned all about lengths, and we can’t wait to see what next week has in store for us. Keep up the great work, Reception!
