Viking Day!

Year 4 had a brilliant day on Monday being Vikings! A focal point of the day was to learn how Vikings sustained themselves on long journeys and the children were amazed to discover that the Vikings preserved most of their food for these journeys.

They learnt about pickling and smoking and how salt and sugar can keep salmon fresh! They were also surprised to learn that the Vikings travelled much further than the British Isles and went as far as Africa in search of exotic fruits and spices – hence why we have Danish pastries, which contain raisins and cinnamon buns which use the spice cinnamon.

Following this workshop session, the children eagerly got to work making their own Viking vegetable broth with dumplings and a roasted vegetable salad. They enthusiastically gobbled up their lunch around the campfire and washed it down with some berry cordial, finished off with overnight cinnamon and raisin oats – delicious! An extra special touch was to try the smoked salmon with apple chutney and crackers – this was a big hit!

Following lunch, the children heard the saga Odin Creates The World and spent some time completing English activities based on the saga. They were then tasked with designing their own world using natural resources. We all had a fabulous day!
