U11A Boys Hockey v Ratcliffe

After the excitement of ISA last week it was back to domestic duties for our U11A as we welcomed a skilful Ratcliffe squad to Copthill on Wednesday 5th February.

The first quarter was evenly balanced, as both sides tested each others level. It soon became clear to Copthill that the Ratcliffe goalie was a cut above, pulling out exceptional saves time and again! With the score still goalless Copthill finally made the breakthrough with the last short corner action of the half. The slender lead was perhaps a fair reflection of our pressure in the first half, but equally of the defensive resilience of the opposition.

We reset at half time, and the boys discussed alternative options to try to break down the defence rather than direct attacks and solo shots. The approach worked, and an inspired 10 minutes of high energy passing saw the goals go in during the third quarter. It was counter-attacking hockey in both directions into the final quarter, with our players rotating positions to maintain the required energy levels on the pitch. The boys conceded an away goal, but continued their strong performance and added a few more well taken goals before the final whistle.

A great challenge set, and eventually overcome. Congratulations to the boys for their developing tactical awareness and perseverance, they are progressing well, but there are plenty more challenges ahead!
