Some of the Y5&6 boys travelled to Southend-on-Sea on Tuesday 27th February for the regional annual ISA football competition.
The boys had been looking forward to this for a very long time and were excited and full of confidence. There were some very good teams in attendance and the organiser said that it was one of the best years in terms of standard across the board, that he had seen for many years.
The boys started a little slowly and with only 5 minute halves, the pace of 5 a-side football took them all by surprise as they lost the first match 2-0. They then followed this up with 2 impressive 4-0 wins! This put them in a great position with the top 2 teams from each group progressing to the nationals at St Georges Park. However, they then came up against 2 very strong teams in Alleyn Court and Finborough, losing 3-0 and 1-0 respectively and both of which teams progressed as 1st and 2nd in our group and Copthill finishing 3rd, therefore, narrowly missing out on a place at the Nationals by one place.
The boys played off for 5th place in the competition which they drew 1-1 and the place was shared between the 2 schools.
The boys can be extremely proud of themselves for their performances and especially as we do not do football as a curriculum sport. If we did, then this would have been a very different outcome as we would have worked on the speed of 5 a-side and positional sense etc… The Y5 boys were superb and with the addition of a couple of Y4 boys to replace the departing Y6 boys next year, certainly bodes well.
Well done boys.
