Earlier this week, Year 4 re-enacted The Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Hastings with some children taking the roles of Harald Hardrada, Tostig Godwinson, Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy.
Harold successfully defeated Harald and Tostig at the Battle of Stamford Bridge before having to journey 185 miles south to meet William and his formidable army. Whilst managing to withhold them for most of the day, due to Harold’s soldiers fighting from high up on a hill, they chased after the French when they scattered. This was a mistake as the French descended upon them, overwhelming the English army, who were weary from their previous battle and smaller in number. The battle ended when Harold was reportedly shot in the eye with an arrow!
