Down in the yurt, the year 1 children were busy making choices about what they thought they should pack in their backpacks for an expedition. They worked in small groups and negotiated and discussed the importance of each item. After careful consideration and thoughtful planning, the backpacks were full! Off we then set on an expedition walk through the grounds of Copthill.
The children were given lots of different scenarios that they could encounter on their expedition. For example, as the night sky darkened, the light started to fade and it made it very difficult to see what was underfoot. There was a quick check in the packed backpacks to see if everyone had packed a torch!
Year 1 then used their backpack writing frame to make a list of all the important items that they had finally decided to take with them and justify why they felt each item was so important for their expedition.
