Why Copthill?
Alongside the latest classroom technology, Copthill’s unique countryside setting provides a brilliant outdoor classroom for our pupils’ learning, play and development.
As the school has grown so has our commitment to developing the outdoor facilities under the banner of the Copthill Forest School. Today we’re immensely proud of our Forest School which incorporates tipis, yurts, a Celtic fort, Saxon village, WW1 trench and an Anderson Shelter alongside the farm, woodland areas and riverbank.
Our GOAL (get outside and learn) approach builds confidence, curiosity and respect for the natural world and mirrors Copthill’s educational vision. More specifically: –
1. Develops Future Skills:
Whether it’s through science experiments in nature, mapping our surroundings, or studying wildlife, these experiences help develop important future skills like observation, critical thinking, and adaptability.
2. Encouraging Responsible Citizens:
Children learn firsthand about sustainability, biodiversity, and the importance of protecting our planet.
3. Nurturing Independent Explorers:
Being outdoors nurtures a sense of curiosity and independence, shaping Copthill pupils into confident, independent explorers who are eager to learn and grow.
4. Fostering Creative Thinkers:
When classroom walls are removed, children can use their imaginations freely—whether they’re creating stories inspired by nature, solving problems using natural materials, or drawing inspiration from the changing seasons.
5. Encouraging Problem Solvers:
The natural world provides endless opportunities for children to engage in hands-on problem-solving,whether they are building a den, navigating a trail, or planning a project with classmates.
6. Enhancing Teamwork:
In outdoor activities, teamwork is essential. From group projects in nature to team-building exercises on the field, children learn how to collaborate, communicate effectively, and support others.
7. Empowering Reflective Learners:
Time spent outdoors provides moments of reflection and self-awareness. Being in nature often leads to calmness, giving children the space to think deeply, reflect on their experiences, and understand themselves better.
The Copthill Campus
From small beginnings in 1969 around the kitchen table at Copthill Farm, our school is now a thriving, purpose-built countryside campus for 300 pupils aged 2 -11.
Down on the farm
Copthill’s unique setting on a working farm allows us to offer children a tailored, hands-on agricultural experience. By providing supervised access to farm animals, we cultivate essential life skills in our pupils. They develop knowledge of animal husbandry, a sense of responsibility, empathy towards living creatures, and practical skills through their interactions with our farmyard friends. This microcosm of farm life enriches their educational journey, fostering a deep connection with nature and agriculture.
