A Wild Week with Where the Wild Things Are!

This week in Reception, we’ve had so much fun exploring the story Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Max’s adventure captured our imaginations and inspired a range of exciting activities.

🎭 Story Time and Discussions
We read the story together and talked about how Max felt at different points—when he wore his wolf suit, when he became king of the Wild Things, and when he missed home. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and making connections with their own feelings.

🕺 Wild Rumpus Dancing
We had our very own Wild Rumpus! The children danced to music just like the Wild Things, moving around the room with lots of energy and excitement.

✍️ Writing Max’s Adventure
The children looked at pictures from the story and wrote simple captions such as “Max sailed on a boat” and “He saw the Wild Things.” They loved retelling parts of the story in their own words.

🎨 Making Wild Thing Masks
Using fabric, collage, and craft materials, the children designed and made their own Wild Thing masks. Each one was different and full of personality!

🗺️ Map-Making
We created a big adventure map showing Max’s journey—from his bedroom, through the forest, and to the island of the Wild Things. The children used natural materials to help build parts of the scene.

🌿 Outdoor Role Play
To finish the week, the children made Max’s crown from paper plates and acted out the story in our forest area. They had lots of fun pretending to be Max and the Wild Things!
