Year 6 combustion and chemical colour changes

To start their new science topic about materials, Year 6 had an exciting morning of exploration in our outdoor learning session and the science lab.

We investigated combustion, recognising the 3 components of the fire triangle, and then making predictions about how the size of a glass beaker would affect the rate at which a candle would go out then made connections with our results and the level of oxygen. We then analysed the periodic table, recognising that group 1 elements had a pattern of reactivity.

We discussed fireworks and how different colours were achieved, understanding that the energy provided caused light to be emitted at different frequencies like the light spectrum and then investigated the different coloured flames that were produced by different elements.

Finally, we learnt about different states of matter and how the particles in solids, liquids and gases are organised differently, using our outdoor environment to act out their movement and show these structures.
