Copthill B’s were straight off the coach and into the thick of the action against Ratcliffe B’s on a warm February afternoon.
The first 5 minutes were played in our half, defending valiantly under constant pressure as we tried to get the long journey out of our systems. Eventually we gained possession and took a foothold in the match, finding our passing range to release the fast-running Oscar and Joshua on each side of the pitch.
With Seb switching into centre-mid, his confidence further established some control in the midfield, so it was no surprise when a lovely through ball arrived for the energetic Moss to latch onto and dispatch with a fierce shot. That first goal allowed the team to breath and find their passing game, demonstrated by one of the goals of the season to-date; a slick succession of one-touch passing and movement from defence, through midfield, wing and back into the D, where Felix calmly arrived to slap it home. Brilliant! Clearly the boys having been listening!
Although up in the game, our defence had to stay focused to absorb many fast flowing Ratcliffe attacks. Charly was composed in the goal when called upon, with Hamish and Thomas communicating well and playing with great composure under pressure. A third well taken goal from Oscar was well deserved for his commitment and movement, being in the right place at the right time is an important skill to develop!
As always some chances went begging, but what is so pleasing is that the chances were being made by sound decision making and excellent build up play, but they now the boys have the added confidence to try deflections and top corner strikes to finish. The game culminated in an unfortunate manner when Joshua’s goal bound top corner strike caught a moving defender square. Hockey is not for the faint-hearted! The ensuing injury drew the match to a close, but we were pleased to see the Ratcliffe player able to join us for tea, and the concerned Joshua, upon reflection, content to keep that one in credit.
Well done Copthill B team! A very impressive performance, some excellent passing hockey, skilful finishing and great teamwork. Very proud of you all today. Mr T
