To finish their ‘Come fly with me America’ topic, Year 6 had an immersive afternoon experiencing some traditional Native American cultural activities.
After being put into tribes and voting for our chief and deciding a tribal name, we created our own headdresses. We practised our hunting skills in our archery session and played some traditional games like stick ball. We also communicated using smoke signals, which we learnt were common ways of sending messages over long distances. Over the fire, we cooked our own traditional Succotash stew, using ingredients that would have been native to America, after discussing the climates that they would have best grown in. All of the children chopped and prepared the stew and then enjoyed it around the fire to finish our afternoon.
We then worked as a team to transport and reconstruct a traditional tipi- which we intend to use for forest school in the future- and discussed how the women would traditionally have been in charge of doing this and deciding the best place to construct this! A fantastic afternoon of learning.
