What an INCREDIBLE day for year 5 and 6, who were treated to an exciting experience day, learning all about the use of planes in WW1. They had a fantastic, expert question and answer session, with an experienced pilot, who led them through the journey of aviation developments. We discussed the early planes and how pilots used to hold pistols out the side of their plane, all the way through to the clever technology of machine guns firing through gaps in the propellers.
We then all had a virtual reality experience of piloting a war plane through VR headsets and a real plane simulator, which moved as the children moved their aircraft.
As well as this, we looked at a range of war poetry, photos and reflections to inspire us to write our own war poems. These were written on special poppy-seeded paper, which is going to be flown out and dropped over the battlefields of France (many areas that Y6 will visit on their residential in May). We were blown away by our children’s knowledge and questioning. Congratulations to the two ‘firsts’ who completed the simulator and knew the name of a very special, but little-known, pilot and the 4 poetry winners.
Thank you to the WW1 aviation heritage trust for such an inspiring day.
