The first Cross Country Race of the year, hosted by Brooke Priory, once again brought our best runners from Years 5 and 6 to the banks of Rutland Water on Friday 29th September. Mercifully, and in stark contrast to the tempest of 2022, the weather was set fair with warm autumn sunshine making it an enjoyable occasion for participants and spectators alike.
The unique course takes the runners on a lovely downhill outward half, before making the turn and heading for home, back up the hill! Combined with the fair but definitely off-road terrain, it is certainly a cross country course that demands every ounce of focus, energy and competitiveness from each and every competitor. Racing against 6 or 7 local schools is always fun, and makes the start line a busy place, full of nervous anticipation, sideways glances and excited chatter. That soon disappears once the race is underway, flying down the hill looking to get pole position before the turn. Later, as each runner digs deep to power their way back up the hill, the exertion is clear to see on their faces and there is nowhere to hide…. they still have to cross that line. As they draw closer they rightly receive the admiration and applause of the coaches and crowds, before a welcome drink of water and much chat about the best and worst bits!
All 25 Copthill runners did themselves and the school proud. Some were hoping for top 10 finishes, others were there to gain valuable experience in their first race. You know your results, and how much effort it took, and if next time you are aiming to go one place higher. Particular congratulations to those who reached the podium: Boogie finishing 2nd, Monty 6th, and the Year 6 Boys team finishing 3rd. Well done to all who took part, a brilliant effort and wonderful first afternoon of competitive cross country!
